Restaurants and the Surrounding areas
Fjöruborðið
Quite simply a local institution! The most famous lobster soup in Iceland - which comes with ‘bottomless’ home baked bread. This is the star attraction, but there is also a modern European selection on the menu. Turn right out of the drive and drive for five minutes to Stokkseyri.
Friðheimar
Slightly further afield but a fabulous place to stop whilst touring The Golden Circle. Here
the humble tomato is the star of the show. Words cannot do this place justice; our advice is, if you can get a table (booking in
advance essential) - just go!
Kaffi Krús
Turning left out of the drive head towards Selfoss. There are a number of restaurants,
Kaffi Krus is one of our favourites. Next to Kronan supermarket, here you can find a wide selection of dishes and some fantastic
cakes!
Gamla Mjólkurbúið - food hall
The Old Dairy in Selfoss, has eight food outlets within its space, servings (amongst others) burgers, pizzas, tacos and Thai. It is a child friendly ‘buzzy’ place on two floors and there are also two bars serving locally brewed beers.
REYKJADALUR VALLEY
This is our absolute favourite. Once unknown to day-trippers, it is being discovered by more
tourists - so pay this place a visit asap. A solid hike through stunning scenery that can be done in an hour (or so) leads you to some beautiful thermal pools half way up a mountain! Pack your swimming wear.
KAYAKFERÐIR
You can hire kayaks in Stokkseyri, just five minutes from The Old School House (turn right at
the end of the drive).
Gunnar will rent you kayaks with all safety equipment and you can paddle through the estuarine backwaters at your leisure.
SELJAVALLALAUG
This is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland; and although it is off the beaten track it is very accessible. Google Maps will take you a small car park half way between Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. From here it is a short hike to the pool. Because of its age this pool is not chlorinated, but you have to ignore the algae under your feet and bathe in a piece of Icelandic history!
THE LAVA CENTRE
Appox 45 mins from The Old School House you will find The Lava Centre in the small town of Hvolsvöllur. The Lava Centre is dedicated to Iceland‘s riveting volcanic activity (which is
certainly in the news lately) and its frequent earthquakes. The centre features an interactive, educational exhibition revealing the science and wonderment of Iceland‘s spectacular geological features.
